What is a unit split?

A unit split (or, more precisely, a unit consolidation) is an accounting event where a mutual fund AMC changes the per-unit NAV scale of a scheme. The most common pattern is a 10:1 consolidation: every 10 existing units become 1 unit, and the NAV jumps 10× to compensate. Some funds do 100:1, occasionally 2:1 or 5:1.

The key thing: an investor's portfolio value does not change at all. If you held 1000 units at ₹116 NAV, you had ₹1,16,000. After a 10:1 consolidation you hold 100 units at ₹1164 NAV — still ₹1,16,400 (the slight up move on the day reflects the day's actual return, not the split). The total value compounds forward from the new scale.

Why do AMCs do this?

Most often, to keep the NAV at a "displayable" scale. Overnight, liquid and ultra-short debt funds compound steadily for years; their NAVs creep into the thousands and become awkward to display in fund-house apps and statements. A 10:1 consolidation brings the NAV back down to a clean two-digit scale. Some new AMCs also consolidate at launch to align with the industry-standard NAV ≈ ₹10 starting point.

Why does it matter for performance data?

Raw NAV history shows a split as a 10× single-day "return". Naïve return / SIP / Sharpe calculations on the raw series produce wildly wrong numbers — a fund that gave 5%/year for a decade can look like it gave 70%/year once a 10× split is included. The investor's actual experience is the 5%/year number.
