Real purchasing power of in years
i.e., today buys what buys today.
Amount needed in years to match today
Why this matters
India's long-run CPI inflation has averaged around 6% — anchored by the RBI's 4%±2% mandate since 2016. At 6%, prices double in ~12 years. A ₹50,000/month lifestyle today costs ₹1,00,000/month in 12 years just to stay even.
Your retirement corpus needs to grow at at least the inflation rate after taxes just to preserve purchasing power. This is why parking money in 5-6% FDs over a 20-year horizon is functionally identical to losing money — the real return after taxes and inflation is often negative.
What rate to use
- 3-4% — conservative, matches developed-market history
- 6% — current India CPI target
- 8-10% — education and healthcare inflation (typically run hotter)
